OUR STORY

A Georgia Pecan Farm Rooted in Fort Valley Since 1919

It all started with a tree. The Double “Q” Brand was born when husband and wife Grover Cleveland Sr. and Octavia Cleveland began growing sweet Georgia peaches in Fort Valley, Georgia, after the turn of the 20th century.

More than a century later, Double Q is still a family Georgia pecan company. We sort and grade every batch by hand, then ship it straight from our farm. Here is how a peach farm became a pecan farm, and what that means for the pecans in your kitchen.

How It Began

Double Q began as a peach farm. Grover Cleveland Sr. and Octavia Cleveland grew sweet Georgia peaches in Fort Valley after the turn of the 20th century. Each August, when the peach trees went bare, they turned to Georgia’s other Southern staple crop, pecans.

Since 1919, the Clevelands have produced pecans on this Georgia pecan farm. They started while Georgia’s pecan industry was still young. According to the New Georgia Encyclopedia, southwest Georgia landowners set off a “pecan boom” around 1910 by planting thousands of acres.

The Generations Since

The Clevelands have kept Double Q in the family for more than a century, and each generation has added to what Grover and Octavia started. Today Double Q is still a family Georgia pecan company that sells direct from its own grove.

Where Do Pecans Come From?

Pecans come from North America. The American Pecan Council describes the pecan as the only major tree nut that grows naturally on the continent. Wild groves first grew in the river valleys of central and eastern North America and Mexico.

Georgia came to pecans later, then caught up fast. By the 1950s, Georgia had become the country’s leading pecan producer (New Georgia Encyclopedia, n.d.). Today Georgia and New Mexico trade the top spot. Georgia led in 2022 with 126 million pounds, and New Mexico led in 2023 with 100 million pounds, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service 2023 Pecan Production report and 2024 Pecan Production report.

How the pecan season works

Georgia pecans grow on a once-a-year cycle. Here is how a pecan tree moves through its season, based on the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension home pecan calendar.

  1. April

Catkins and flowers appear with the new leaves.

  2. June to August

The nuts size up inside green shucks.

  3. September and October

Shucks split open and harvest begins.

Harvest typically continues through November. You can follow each step, from shaking the trees to cleaning the nuts, in our guide to how pecans are harvested.

Why the timing matters

One harvest a year means freshness depends on how pecans are handled after they come off the tree. We sort and grade every batch by hand before it goes in the bag, so sizing stays consistent and broken pieces stay out. Every order ships fresh from our Georgia pecan farm in Fort Valley.
